Battleline
In a follow on post from yesterday’s we get another view of the Third Fleet battleships and cruisers that bombarded Kamaishi, Japan on 14 July 1945. This photograph was again taken from South Dakota (BB-57). Following behind her in the battleline is her sister, Indiana (BB-58). Aft of the Indiana is Massachusetts (BB-59) and the Baltimore class cruisers, Chicago (CA-136) and Quincy (CA-71). The most decorated of these warships was the South Dakota. SoDak, or Battleship X as she was nicknamed, earned 13 battle stars for her service in WWII. Massachusetts earned 11 while serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters and Indiana earned nine battle stars for her flag. Of the two cruisers Quincy earned four battle stars while the Chicago received one.
