Sisters Working Together

This great family photo from late in the war, contains three of the four South Dakota class battleships plying their trade together. The photograph was taken from the South Dakota (BB-57) seconds after she fired her first salvo on the Japan Iron Company’s Kamaishi plant. SoDak’s sister, the Indiana (BB-58), is in the foreground firing a salvo of her own. The superstructure of their third sister, Massachusetts (BB-59), can be seen just in front of Indiana’s bridge. The final ship in the photograph is a Baltimore class heavy cruiser, either Quincy (CA-71) or Chicago (CA-136). This photo was taken on 14 July 1945 when the four warships were assigned to Third Fleet and dispatched to bombard the Japanese city Kamaishi on Honshū.
