Commanders at Gettysburg: General James Longstreet

After the death of General Thomas Jackson at Chancellorsville, General Longstreet became Lee's second in command. Longstreet arrived at Gettysburg ahead of his troops late in the afternoon on July 1. By the time he arrived, Hill and Ewell's men had already pushed the Union troops back through the town of Gettysburg and into defensive positions on Cemetery Hill. Longstreet expressed his concern about the strength of the Union Army to Lee, but Lee insisted upon attacking Union positions on the second day of battle. Lee's plan for July 2nd called for Longstreet to attack the Union's left flank which would be followed by Hill's attack on Cemetery Ridge near the center and the Ewell attacked the Union right.

Buford knew the importance of the high ground south of Gettysburg and with his skillful disposition of his dismounted troopers, as well as their bravery and tenacity, they managed to hold the high ground until Major General John F. Reynolds and I Corps could come up and support them. Burford's leadership and tactical foresight was a major factor that eventually lead to the Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg. General Buford survived the battle, but ended up dying in December of 1863 of tyfoid. Our next subject will be the commander of I Corps, General Reynolds.

M3 Scout Car

I’ve always had a soft spot for the White M3 Scout Car and the one above is no exception. This brand new looking M3 Scout Car belonged to the 1st Armored Regiment at Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1940. The M3 Scout Car originally entered service with the US Army in 1938 and was eventually superseded by the larger M3A1. There were a total of 64 M3s built.

Lightning Legends

Major Thomas McGuire is seen above discussing a mission with a civilian technical representative from United Aircraft. The tech rep in the photo is none other than Charles Lindbergh. Lindbergh was sent to help train 475th Fighter Group pilots in methods to extend the range of their P-38 Lightnings. Lindbergh actually flew several combat missions with the 475th FG and scored at least one air to air victory on a Japanese aircraft. Major McGuire would end up as the United States’ second highest scoring ace of the war with 38 kills. He was also awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously after his was killed in action on a fighter sweep over the Philippines on 7 January 1945. The above photo was taken on Biak Island, New Guinea in July of 1944.
