Finally, a football antenna replaced the existing loop antenna on the chin.

There were 39 B-17Bs built, none of which saw combat during World War II. The B-17C did see combat in the hands of the RAF. Of the 38 Cs that were built, 20 went to the RAF and 18 went to the USAAF.

I’m back! Kind of. I still won’t have a ton of time for posting in the next couple of weeks, but I figured I would try and get up a few shorter posts while I had the chance this week. Expect most of the upcoming posts to be P-47 Thunderbolt related. I am a happy to report that I passed MEPS and am preparing to take the ASTB this week. In the mean time, here is the beginning of a brief photo miniseries, starring the P-47.

A mix of six P-47C and D Thunderbolts of the 62nd Fighter Squadron are seen above during a bomber escort mission. The lead Jug was being flown by Captain Horace Craig. The photo was taken from the waist gun position on a USAAF B-24D in May of 1943 while the aircraft were returning to base at RAF Horsham St. Faith. The 62nd FS was assigned to VII Fighter Command in England throughout the war. They primarily flew escort missions for B-24 and B-17 bomber units.

A B-17C of the 7th Bomb Group is seen above in this photo dating from January of 1941. It is accompanied by a B-17B of the 19th BG.

The main visible differences between the B-17B and C were in their armament. On the C model, all of the B’s streamlined gun blisters were removed. The waist guns were no longer mounted on pedestals inside the fuselage with the blisters. Instead, they were in stepped plexiglass fairings that slid back to uncover the gun. The lower gun blister was also changed to a bath tub resembling affair, with the gun firing down and to the rear.

While taking cover behind an M4A3E8 Sherman, a BAR man of the 5th Regimental Combat Team, 24th Infantry Division returns small arms fire at Chinese troops. This photograph was taken 3 February 1951, on the banks of the Han River during the Korean War. The BAR man is using an M1918A2 rifle that has had the bipod and flash hider removed, a fairly common occurrence in combat BARs. To the left of the photo, another soldier can be seen on the radio, presumably reporting the group’s situation to headquarters or calling in for air or artillery support.

The battlecruiser Alaska is seen above on 13 November 1944, not long after the completion of her shakedown cruise. Alaska and the Missouri (BB-63), both conducted their shakedown cruises at the same time off of the East Coast. The above photo was probably taken near Philadelphia Naval Yard. She is wearing a magnificent Measure 32/1D camouflage, a scheme she would have for the early part of her service in the Pacific Theater. Alaska and her sister, Guam (CB-2), would primarily serve as escorts for the carriers of Task Force 58 during their brief time in action.
