The United States lost another great public servant today with the passing of George H.W. Bush at the age of 94. Bush served as a naval aviator during the Second World War, flying TBM Avengers. The future president was shot down on a combat mission over Chichijima and would go on to earn a Distinguished Service Cross and three Air Medals. He also received a Presidential Unit Citation along with the rest of the crew of his carrier, USS San Jacinto (CVL-30). Bush would then pursue a career in politics after the war and served as the US ambassador to China, director of the CIA and as Vice President of the United States under Ronald Reagan for two terms. Bush was then elected as the 41st President of the United States and served one term. Bush’s presidency was highlighted by his excellent leadership and statesmanship during Operation Desert Shield and Storm. George Herbert Walker Bush will be fondly remembered for his years of humble public service.

USS West Virginia (BB-48), unleashes a 16 inch salvo into the night on 25 October 1944. The Pearl Harbor survivor fired sixteen salvos during the Battle of Surigao Strait in the early morning hours of 25 October, scoring hits on the battleship Yamashiro and cruiser Mogami. Surigao Strait would go into the history books as the final battleship verses battleship engagement in naval history. West Virginia is photographed above from fellow Pearl Harbor veteran, USS Pennsylvania (BB-38).

Brigadier General John J. Pershing is seen above with his staff, crossing the Santa Marie River at El Valle, Mexico on 29 August 1916. At that time, Pershing was leading the Army’s punitive expedition into Mexico to pursue Pancho Villa. A month after this photo was taken, Pershing received his second star. He would go on to lead the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during the First World War. Eleven years prior to this photo being taken, Pershing had been promoted from captain to brigadier general by President Theodore Roosevelt, ahead of 835 other officers of higher seniority. A move that shocked the Army establishment. However, it worked out for Pershing and the Army because in 1919, Pershing became the only active duty Army General Officer to be promoted to General of the Armies, the equivalent of a six star rank. The only other officer to also attain that rank was George Washington, posthumously in 1976.

The North Carolina class battleship, USS Washington (BB-56), is seen above from an interesting perspective. This photograph was taken from the island of the Royal Navy aircraft carrier, HMS Victorious, in July of 1942. The aircraft being refueled on her flight deck are Hawker Sea Hurricanes. Washington served in the Atlantic from January through August of 1942, mostly with the Royal Navy. The main duty undertaken by BB-56 while she was in the Atlantic was convoy escort. Washington and Victorious were taking part in a convoy escort mission in the photo above.
