Goa Gajah literally means Elephant Cave is located near Ubud, in Bali, Indonesia. Its said to be built 12 centuries ago but is probably a lot older.

One folklore relates that it was created by the fingernail of the legendary giant Kebo Iwa.The temple is characterised by menacing faces that are carved into the stone – whose purpose is unknown.

Sources state that it is named after the stone statue of the Hindu God Ganesh (characterised by having the head of an elephant) located inside of the temple.

Goa Gajah is mentioned in the Javanese poem Desawarnana written in 1365. Also Nagarakretagama its an Old Javanese Eulogy Hayam Wuruk, a king of the Majapahit Empire of Java.

The doorway of the cave is really cool and bizarre, and it feels like you’re walking into the belly of some rock monster!
The inside of the cave has a narrow path that goes about 50 feet deep, where you’ll find some incense baskets burning.
