Lata Mangeshkar the greatest playback singer of Hindi Cinema bids us farewell. From “Aayega Aanewala” in 1948 to “Tere Liye” in 2005 her reign lasted for nearly 6 decades.
Her unparalleled melodious voice was the favourite of at least 4 generations of Indians .
As a great icon of popular culture, her songs through Cinema halls and radio spread hindi and Indian nationalism throughout the country more than any “Sarkari Sanstha”.
Lata along with Rafi,Asha,Kishore and others made hindi respectable in elite Indian circles.
She gave voice to
Love—-“lag jaa gale ke yeh haseen raat”
Inspiration—“jindgi pyar ka geet hai”
Ecstacy—“aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai”
Defiance—“pyar kiya to darna kya”
Hope—“tere bina jindgi se koyi shikwa nahin”
Pain——“akele hain chale aao”
Longing —“lo aa gayi unki yaad ”
and patriotism —“ae mere watan ke logo”
for billions across generations.
Lata was one of the last great cultural unifiers of the country. The reach and clout she had in the days of Cinema and All India radio cant be imagined in todays multiple cultural worlds of netflix, youtube, multiplexes,FM and segregated regional and age group markets.
Despite her notorious vindictiveness which cut short the careers of many talented singers and fondness for icons of hard hindutva, her songs will outlive her and continue to give voice to our deepest emotions.
RIP Lata Mangeshkar
