He actually instructed the child’s mother to pick up the baby and toss the lifeless body into the water. When the mother sobbed in misery and sadness, the captain thrashed her cruelly until she picked up the infant and hurled it into the sea. She couldn’t believe what had occurred and turned away to avoid seeing her child fall into the water. All of this occurred in the presence of other black slaves who groaned and screamed out in agony at what the captain had done to a helpless infant and his mother.
