Interesting news coming out of Washington overnight. It looks like the Department of Justice will file an antitrust suit against Google before the end of the year.

The suit is focused on Google's power in the digital ad market, and how it uses its dominance in auctions and ad tech to maintain power.

Google's stance is (of course) that there is "enormous competition in advertising tools, which has made online ads more relevant, reduced fees, and expanded options for publishers and advertisers.”

We disagree with this!

In October 2020, Google and Facebook controlled 29.8% and 23.6% respectively of the digital advertising market. Over half the market.

While ad tech fees are reducing, we still have a market where 49% of an advertiser’s dollar has been siphoned off before it reaches a publisher, and the publishers’ attempts to recoup some of this have contributed to the messy UX we see on so many websites.
