Quantum computing on smartphones: Baidu's new release opens a new era

Chinese multinational technology company Baidu just released its first quantum computer on Thursday.

The first superconducting quantum computer, "Qian Shi" can integrate hardware, software, and many applications. Baidu also introduced the world's first all-platform quantum hardware-software integration solution - Liang Xi - that provides access to various quantum chips via mobile app, PC, and cloud.

Qian Shi is expected to solve data that a standard computer cannot calculate and problems that cannot be solved. This development is also thought to be a breakthrough in artificial intelligence, computational biology, material simulation, and financial technology.

T-Mobile and SpaceX Starlink say your 5G phone will connect to satellites next year

T-Mobile says it’s getting rid of mobile dead zones, thanks to a new partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet, at an event hosted by T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert and Elon Musk. With their “Coverage Above and Beyond” setup, mobile phones could connect to satellites and use a slice of a connection providing around 2 to 4 Megabits per second connection (total) across a given coverage area.

Mark Zuckerberg spent $10B on the metaverse and all he got was this stupid selfie

I don't want to start this post by personally attacking Mark Zuckerberg's eyes, which have in years past been described as "two weird lil black marbles" and "vacant, black shark eyes." Who wouldn't look utterly bereft of a soul after trying to explain the internet to the United States Senate? I also don't need to suggest Mark Zuckerberg may in fact be a robot, since there's an entire meme community devoted to that joke. I am avoiding these easy, obvious dunks on ol' Zuck because his latest "metaverse" selfie looks so bad, he's already owned himself harder than I possibly could.

Zuckerberg posted a screenshot from Meta's Horizon Worlds(opens in new tab) on Facebook earlier this week, saying that he's "looking forward to seeing people explore and build immersive worlds" in the VR "metaverse." The screenshot is not just bad: it is exquisitely bad. It is ironic clipart bad. It is stock-cratering, anyone-other-than-a-billionaire-CEO-would-immediately-be-fired-for-this bad. Meta spent $10 billion on developing whatever the hell it's doing with the metaverse last year, and all it's got to show for it is a baby doll-faced Zuckerberg hovering in front of a miniature Eiffel Tower.

IBM Releases Deep Search For Scientific Discovery

IBM's Deep Search for Scientific Discovery (DS4SD) Toolkit has been made available to the public. It comes from the depths of IBM's research labs using NLP to analyze mass amounts of data.

Deep Search is a cloud-based AI research service offered as a SaaS that allows researchers to load large amounts of structured or unstructured data to immediately find useful connections. The sources that Deep Search can consume vary and range from journal articles to patents to technical reports and more. By using AI and NLP it can ingest 20 pages per second whereas a typical human expert takes 1–2 minutes per page just to read, and automatically extracts the semantic units and their relationships. It then builds a searchable knowledge graph which enables its users to:

robustly explore information extracted from tens of thousands of documents without having to read a single paper.

Five years later, Google is still all-in on Kotlin

It’s been just over five years since Google first announced that it would make Kotlin, the statically typed language for the Java Virtual Machine first developed by JetBrains, a first-class language for writing Android apps at Google I/O 2017. Since then, Google took this a step further by making Kotlin its preferred language for writing Android apps in 2019 — and while plenty of developers still use Java, Kotlin is quickly becoming the default way to build apps for Google’s mobile operating system. Back in 2018, Google and JetBrains also teamed up to launch the Kotlin Foundation.

Earlier this week, I sat down with Google’s James Ward, the company’s product manager for Kotlin, to talk about the language’s role in the Android ecosystem and beyond, as well as the company’s future plans for it.

Researchers find way to shrink a VR headset down to normal glasses size
Researchers from Stanford University and Nvidia have teamed up to develop VR glasses that weigh just 60 grams. The Holographic Glasses use pancake lenses, which allow for a smaller profile and unlimited resolution. They currently only offer a field-of-view of 22.8 degrees. The glasses require a very accurate measurement of the users' pupils to work. A video explaining the technology behind the Holographic Glasses is available.

New Wi-Fi Reflection Tech Could Send Signal Through Impenetrable Walls (2 minute read)
Austrian scientists have developed a technique to eliminate wave reflections caused by physical interference. The technique involves covering walls with an anti-reflective coating. Walls scatter waves in different ways, so the scientists had to measure how each wall reflected waves and then create a custom coating for every wall. The technology could help improve Wi-Fi, imaging processes, and mobile communication technology.
