When William West ended up in the Leavenworth County Jail in 1903, Kansas, USA, prison officials were confused because they already had a man with the exact same name and appearance in their jail.

Until then, the Bertillon system, based on five basic measurements: head length, head width, middle finger length, left foot length, and forearm length from elbow to end of middle finger, had been used to identify criminals in the United States.
