These paintings are distinctive with their vivid contrast expressions.
These paintings are mainly dominated by basic geometric shapes like circles, triangles and squares.

These geometric shapes stand as a symbol of natural elements in our environment.

For example, the circles represent the sun and moon, the triangles represent the mountains and the squares are considered as the central motifs of the painting.

People and animals are represented by two inverted triangles joined together, where the upper triangle is the torso and the lower triangle is the pelvis.

The central theme of the paintings are scenes portraying hunting, fishing, farming, festival and dances, trees and animals are used to surround the central theme.

Manjusha art or Angika art originated in Anga Pradesh (Present Day Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal) which was used in Bihula-Vishahri Pooja, celebrated usually in August to please snake gods (Nag).[1]Manjusha art is a folk art of Bhagalpur, Bihar, and has been dated back to the 7th century.

Thangkas are painted on cotton or silk.

The most common is a loosely woven cotton produced in widths from 40 to 58 cm (16 – 23 inches). While some variations do exist, thangkas wider than 45 cm (17 or 18 inches) frequently have seams in the support.

The paint consists of pigments in a water-soluble medium of animal glue. Both mineral and organic pigments are used.

In Western terminology, this is a distemper technique; although it is often described as a form of gouache, this is incorrect, and the paint was applied as a warm liquid, mixed shortly before application.Most old thangka have inscriptions on the back, usually the mantra of the deity depicted, but sometimes also information as to later owners, though rarely information about the original commissioner or artist. Sometimes x-rays allow pious inscriptions placed under the paint on the front of the image to be seen. Inscriptions may be made in the shape of a stupa, or sometimes other shapes. Open / Comment

The Patua is a community found in West Bengal.

Some Patuas are Hindus, while others are Muslims and Buddhists.

The paintings tradition of Patuas was started as a village tradition as painters of scrolls or pats telling the popular mangal stories of the gods and goddesses.

The Patua painters or scroll painters have gone from village to village with their scrolls or pat singing stories in return for money or food.
