Mercury does not have a thick atmosphere to protect it from space debris. That’s why the whole planet is riddled with craters. The most spectacular sight is the Caloris Basin measuring 1,525 kilometers across. “Basin” is what geologists call craters larger than 300 kilometers in diameter. Caloris is one of the youngest large basins known: it probably was formed about 3.9 billion years ago.
