As global populations continue to rise at an alarming rate, humanity starts to think about how to accommodate everyone on our little planet. Japanese construction company Shimizu Corp thinks outside the box.

The project called “Ocean Spiral” is designed to accommodate 5000 people underwater. Residents will live in houses located within floating spheres 500 meters in diameter. Located at the bottom of the ocean, the base camps with offices, hotels, labs and apartments would be the size of small villages anchored with gigantic cables.

The company came up with a concept of an underwater metropolis powered by energy from the seabed: micro-organisms will turn carbon dioxide into methane, while power generators located along the ocean spiral will use differences in seawater temperatures to create additional energy. The city will also be equipped with fish farms for food and a desalination systems for drinking water.

The project is scheduled for 2030.
