The Hardness of the Heart
by ibn Qayyim (رحمه الله)

‏༄༅‏༄༅‏༄༅❁✿❁ ‏༄༅‏༄༅‏༄❁✿ ‏❁ ༄༅‏ ‏

A slave is not afflicted with a punishment greater than the hardness of the heart and being distanced from Allaah. The fire of (hell) was created to soften the hardened hearts. The farthest hearts from Allaah are the hardened hearts. When the heart is hardened, the eyes become dry (lacking in (discernment, perception, crying out of fear of Allaah etc). The hardness of the heart occurs through four things when their limit is exceeded; Food, Sleep, Speech and Socializing. And just as the diseased body is not benefitted by food and drink, likewise the heart is not benefitted by admonitions when it is diseased with desires. Whoever desires purification of his heart then let him give precedence to Allaah over his desires. The heart that is attached to desires is veiled from Allaah in accordance to the strength of its attachment to them. The hearts are the vessels of Allaah upon His earth, hence the most beloved of them to Him are those that are most tender, pure and resistant to deviation.

The transgressors preoccupied their hearts with the pursuance of this world. If only they had preoccupied them with Allaah and seeking the Hereafter then they would have instead reflected upon the meaning of His Words and His Signs that are witnessed in creation. Their hearts would have returned to their owners (in whose chests they reside) bestowing upon them marvelous wisdom and pearls of benefit.

When the heart is nourished with dhikr (the remembrance of Allaah), its thirst quenched with contemplation and cleansed from corruption, it shall witness remarkable and wondrous matters and be inspired with wisdom.

Not every individual who is endowed with knowledge and wisdom and dons its robe is from among its people. Rather the People of Knowledge and Wisdom are those who have infused life into their hearts by slaughtering their desires. As for the one who has destroyed his heart and given precedence to his desires then knowledge and wisdom are deprived from his tongue.

The destruction of the heart occurs through possessing a sense of security and negligence. The heart is fortified through fear of Allaah and dhikr. If the heart renounces the pleasures of this world then it will be directed towards pursuing the bliss of the Hereafter and it will be amongst those who call to it. Should the heart become content with the pleasures of this world the bliss of the Hereafter ceases to be pursued.

Yearning for Allaah and His meeting is like a gentle breeze blowing upon the heart, blowing away the blazing desire for this world. Whosoever causes his heart to settle with his Lord shall find himself in a calm and tranquil condition and whosoever sends it amongst the people shall be disturbed and excessively perturbed. This is because the love of Allaah can never enter
the heart which contains love of this world until the camel passes through the eye of a needle.

Therefore the most beloved servant to Allaah is the one whom He places in His servitude, whom He selects for His Love, whom He causes to purify his worship for Him, who dedicates his life to Him, his tongue to His dhikr and his limbs to His service.

The heart becomes sick as the body becomes sick and its cure lies in repentance and seeking protection from evil.
It becomes rusty as a mirror becomes rusty and it is polished through dhikr.
It becomes naked as the body becomes naked and its adornment comes about through taqwaa.

It becomes hungry and thirsty as the body becomes hungry and thirsty and its hunger and thirst is satiated through knowledge, love, reliance, repentance and servitude to Allaah.

Al-Fawaa`id [pp. 111-112]

“Therefore, I urge my Muslim brothers to seize this great opportunity and to increase in righteous deeds during these ten days of Dhul-Hijjah [by way of] reciting the Qur’ān, making takbeer [uttering Allāhu Akbar], tahleel [uttering Lā ilāha illAllāh], tahmeed [uttering Alhamdulillāh], tasbeeh [uttering Subhān Allāh], giving in charity, fasting and performing all [other] types of righteous deeds and exerting oneself therein.”

2021-06-10 11:03:03 Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, Miftaah Daar al-Sa’aadah (1:418) said:

The superiority of knowledge over wealth is understood from numerous angles:

1. Knowledge is the inheritance of the Prophets, while wealth is merely the inheritance of kings and the rich.
2. Wealth is diminished by spending, whereas knowledge grows when it is disbursed.
3. When the possessor of wealth dies, his wealth leaves him, whereas a man’s knowledge accompanies him to his grave.
4. Knowledge is what judges and rules over wealth, but wealth does not judge knowledge.
5. Wealth is acquired by the believer, the unbeliever, the righteous and the sinful; but beneficial knowledge is not acquired except by the believer.
6. The scholar is needed by the kings and those beneath them, whereas the possessor of wealth is only needed by the poor and destitute.
7. The soul is ennobled, purified and developed through the acquisition of and concern for knowledge – that is part of its completeness and nobility; whereas wealth neither purifies, completes nor adds a noble quality to the soul.
On the contrary, the soul declines, becomes more greedy and more miserly through the gathering and concern for wealth. Thus, the soul’s concern for knowledge is its very completion, whereas the soul’s concern for wealth is its very decline.
8. Wealth calls the soul to transgression, pride and arrogance; whereas knowledge calls it to humility and the establishment of servitude and worship [of Allāh]. Thus, wealth calls the soul to the qualities of mere kings, whereas knowledge calls to the qualities of true servants [of Allah].
9. Knowledge attracts and conveys the soul to the felicity it was created for, whereas wealth is a veil between the two.
10. Enrichment with knowledge is loftier than enrichment with material wealth.
Because being rich with wealth is enrichment by something external to the human: if that wealth were to depart in one night he would be immediately destitute. However, richness of knowledge is not under the threat of poverty, rather it is in ever increase.
Thus, it is in reality the highest form of richness, as was said:
“I gained independence from everyone without acquiring wealth. Verily, the highest richness is in freedom from needing a thing, not in needing to possess it.”
11. Wealth enslaves the one who covets it and makes him into a slave of it, as the Prophet – Allah’s praise and peace be upon him – said,
Wretched be the slave of the dirham and the deenaar…
But knowledge makes its possessor a servant and worshipper of his Lord and Creator,it does not call him except to servitude to Allah alone.
12. The love of knowledge and its pursuit is the root of all obedience [to Allah],whereas the love of this worldly life (dunyaa) and its wealth is the root of all evil.
13. The value of a rich man is his wealth, while the value of a learned man is his knowledge.
The former is valued according to his wealth: if it ceases, so does his value; he is left valueless. The value of a learned man does not decrease; it is always on the rise.
