In the name of Allah The Most Merciful, The Ever Merciful.

Third benefit: How does the servant's recognition of his Lord - Majestic and High is He - materialize?

The eminent scholar Sâlih al-Louheydân - رحمه الله تعالى - said:

"And in this introduction to these "4 rules", he asks his Lord in favor of the student of religious knowledge¹, that he becomes among those who are grateful when they receive.

And the recognition of the blessings is part of the causes of their maintenance and their proliferation. And what opposes it, is the denial of the blessings and this cause to their disappearance.

Allah says (according to the meaning):

{And when your Lord proclaimed: "If you are grateful, most certainly, I will increase [My benefits] for you. But if you are ungrateful, My punishment will be terrible."}

[sura Ibrâhîm:7]

He says: he who has been clothed with these three qualities:

recognition of the benefits,

patience during adversity

and the request for forgiveness of sins.

When Allah favors him with attaining these three traits; physical health, the preservation from evil, the acquisition of sustenance, offspring, marriage or any thing among those that arepermissible, let him know that this is a grace of Allah, [that this is part of] His bestowal and bounty. Let him then hasten to be grateful, to give praise to the One who has gratified him, because certainly no one directs towards the virtues besides Him and no one discards vices other than of Him. Let him [therefore] thank his Lord.

And gratitude is manifested in word and deed:

By speech: he praises Allah and thanks Him for what He has granted him.

And by deed: if He has granted him wealth, he spends it asking for his growth; for alms never diminished wealth.

And if he granted him the legislated science, he teaches the people good while reaping the reward, and which he places at the disposal of the people as good that which will give them cheerfulness; for no man will be [truly] a believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.

And if He has granted him physical health, he enjoys his free time in what Allah - Majestic and High be He - loves and is pleased with, so that he is not among the losers. This, because as mentioned in the authentic²: “There are two blessings that many people lose out on: health and free time.”

When the servant praises His Lord and thanks Him, then he obtains blessings in what Allah Has granted him from good, health, science, family or child.»

Explanation of the four rules p.3-4.

¹ translator's note: the student of religious science, this term is not specific only to those who go out in search of this science but it also concerns ordinary Muslims who have the duty to know: who is Allah? What are the foundations of His religion and what did His Prophet (ﷺ) come with?
