To use a preposition FROM after "suffer" or not?

SUFFER can have different meanings

1)To experiene or to show something bad
We suffered engine failure.
Passengers suffered minor injuries.
If you do it like this,you will suffer the consequences.

2)to experience physical or mental pain
He suffered a lot when his wife left him.
But!!!
He suffers FROM asthma.(he is ill with asthma)
He has been suffering FROM cancer.(he is ill with cancer)

So,when we use FROM, we show the cause why we suffer.

In terms of Aviation English,when we speak about failures,it will be without a preposition.

We suffered electrical system failure.(=we experienced).
We suffer engine failure.(=we have it,we experience it).
We suffered difficulties last flight.(=we had them,we experienced them).

But!!! when we speak about a particular illness or disability,it will be SUFFER FROM.
She suffers from headache.
He suffers from flue.
