In Western Australia, north of the mouth of the Hutt River, there is a salt lake called Hutt Lagoo. The water in this lake is pink because of algae that produce the red-orange pigment beta-carotene. Today, one-fifth of Lake Hutt Lagoo is used to grow reddish algae, from which beta-carotene is then produced.
