These butterflies are surprisingly tame, landing on the hands and heads of tourists.
The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in the Mexican state of Michoacán was created to preserve the wintering range of the Monarch butterfly and covers 56,259 hectares. It is located in a wooded mountain area about 3,000 meters above sea level.
There are eight colonies of this butterfly in the park. Up to one billion individuals winter in the biosphere reserve from November to March.
