On Mount Everest there is a so-called "death zone," which begins after the 8,000-meter mark. Climbers who die in this zone usually stay there for a long time, since a helicopter cannot climb to such heights, and in such conditions it is an extremely dangerous task even for very experienced rescuers to carry dead bodies on their backs.
The bodies of some of the deceased become landmarks for other climbers. For example, one such landmark was a man known as the Green Shoes. His brightly colored shoes pointed the way to the summit from 1996 to 2014.
In 2014, however, "Green Shoes" was lost from sight. Irish climber Noel Hannah noted that most of the bodies on the north slope had disappeared without a trace. They may have been moved or buried under rocks.
