It's not a meet-up. Not a meeting. It's not a rally. It's not a political demonstration. It's not an event.

News report: "There has been a Nazi rally." Connotation: Bad men doing bad things.

Flyer language: "There will be a spelling bee" Connotation: Kids showing off spelling kids for trophies.

Use language that attracts. You catch more flies with HONEY than with vinegar. Hold a bee. Not a rally. Everyone is afraid they'll lose their job by attending a "rally". Nobody's afraid they'll lose their job for attending a quilting "bee", a knitting "bee", a hair-braiding "bee", a chili cook-off, the Highland Games, a strong man competition, a survivalist forum, a farm equipment demonstration, a boat show or "wooden boat festival", etc.

The main thing to collect at these events is contact information, adding people to a mailing list or maybe, for a more personal option, a "phone tree" where people can call or text a few people per week who are interested in church events, youth organizations, scouting, karate or other self-improvement, health and diet clubs, sewing circles, etc.
