With the emergence of massive online free to play games like Fortnite and Call of Duty Warzone (which they now own), cloud-based gaming could be the next major pivot for Microsoft

Microsoft has clearly identified gaming as a priority market, and this follows their purchase of Bethesda (makers of Skyrim and Fallout) last year for $7.5bn. Buying Activision adds some of the largest gaming franchises in the world to their stable, including call of duty and candy crush, two very different but exceptionally profitable titles.
It seems like Microsoft are looking to grab as many big-name gaming franchises as possible. This could help them two-fold:
1. They could look to give Xbox a push by making some of these titles exclusive to their consoles, or creating a subscription service that offers access to these games. PlayStation seems to be comfortably outselling the new gen Xbox, and Nintendo have the two largest game franchises in the world exclusive to their consoles (Pokémon and Mario), so Xbox does risk becoming a distant 3rd place
2. Access to premium game titles and highly skilled teams could help Microsoft's move into the metaverse. Premium 1st person shooters like call of duty seem like the ideal platforms for VR and AR gaming
