2022-02-18 13:24:49 Tim Cook is a fantastic case study. He’s not flashy at all, but he has streamlined and optimized Apple into arguably the most efficient multinational in the world. Conversely, his pay is 1400x the average Apple employees salary. So there’s an argument that Apple’s success is due to a lot more than just his good work, and maybe the love should be shared

1) The rand has been on a tear this year, up 7% YTD and hitting highs vs the dollar (R14.9/$) not seen since November. With the threat of war and rampant inflation in developed markets, our relatively low inflation and commodity industries have looked very attractive.

2) Truworths, the market leader in the old lady clothes category, had a great year. They’ve hiked their dividend payout, and the market showed them some love with 9.5% pop on Thursday.

3) It’s been a tough few years for the airline industry, and the worlds largest aircraft manufacturers haven’t been spared. Airbus hasn't paid a dividend in 2 years, but they’re trying to get back on the (air)bus with a proposed payout in the next few months.

4) How much is a good CEO worth? Apple are planning to pay Tim Cook $99m dollars this year for shepherding the business through the pandemic and building a supply chain juggernaut.

1) Naija Boyz are spreading their wings are soaring. Flutterwave, a Nigerian payments company, recently became the most valuable start-up in Africa with a $3bn valuation for their latest fundraising. This is 3x their valuation from 12 months ago.

2) Once considered terminally ill, Steinhoff has made an Undertaker-esque recovery. They’ve just reached a R24bn settlement with shareholders affected by their accounting crisis (paid in Pepkor shares and cash). Last year, this was the JSE’s best performing stock. We may be ready to get hurt again.

3) Spar is halving dividend payouts for the next 2 years to fund its expansion in Poland. Irish banks didn’t love the idea of giving them more debt, and so shareholder money is the alternative. In an increasingly competitive local market, this could either be a growth frontier or expensive mistake

For those of you who follow us on twitter, we just had a fantastic Spaces with the Plantfuelled team on personal finance for athletes.

We love their products and know that a lot of us who work long hours in high pressure jobs struggle to stay focused when we’re deep into extra time. So we’ve asked them to pull together a special product that doesn’t have any unhealthy shit, helps with focus while still helping you sleep (when you eventually get to it).

Check it out and let us know what you think!

1) Mark Barnes (ex CEO of the Post Office who recently publicly expressed his interest in buying the prehistoric Postnet) could be getting his cash together. Yesterday, he sold a small percentage of his shareholding in Purple Group (~1.5% of total shares; ~R30 mil) to a longtime business partner

2) Warren Buffett (famous investor who’s older than sin) stands to make a massive profit on an e-gaming company. Berkshire Hathaway purchased a ~$1 bn stake in Activision Blizzard in Q4 of 2021, a few months before Microsoft announced plans to buy the company for $75bn. That stake is already up ~23%, and the profit will jump to ~50% if the Microsoft deal goes through. That’s a serious loot chest for a ballie who was already at retirement age when Tetris was invented

3)Things are looking up for Glencore, even after a great few months. They’re planning a massive dividend of $4bn, and expects to resolve bribery and corruption investigations in the UK, US and Brazil this year (having set aside $1.5bn to cover potential fines and costs)

4) SPAR launched the pilot phase of SPAR2U, an e-commerce platform for groceries and liquor to take on Pick n Pay’s Asap and Checkers' Sixty60 and Woolworth's Woolies Dash. Checkers simultaneously delivered our lunch and ate the lunch of all the other SA retailers, and now it’s catch up time

1. Big news coming out of the JSE yesterday was earnings guidance from Aveng and Dischem. Aveng was down ~20% on the day, and Dischem down ~3%, albeit for different reasons
2. Aveng has gotten a lot of love from SA traders in recent years, largely because it used to trade for a few cents, and therefore small absolute share price movements became significant in % terms (e.g. if it moved from 1c to 2c, that's a 100% gain). Yesterday, Aveng released guidance which suggested it's earnings will be down ~90% year on year, and the market predictably hated that news
3. Dischem have been on a pretty ambitious strategic growth push recently, and yesterday's guidance was our first chance to look at their numbers with the new businesses brought in. Earnings are up ~15%, and up ~5% excluding the new businesses. The market curiously reacted negatively (perhaps expecting more growth?)
