2017-01-03 07:00:04 Rumor: ‘Han Solo’ Spinoff Pushed To December 2018

So far, we’ve seen two films released since Disney‘s acquisition of Lucasfilm, and both have been monster hits: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” totalled $2.1 billion worldwide, and it looks like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will easily cross $1 billion worldwide. Both films were released in December, as will the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which barring some kind of disaster, will also make a billion dollars and then some. Disney has clearly made the holiday season theirs, so why mess with a good thing?

According to the very well connected Making Star Wars, Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s developing Han Solo spinoff movie starring Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, and Emilia Clarke is now eyeballing a December 13, 2018 release date, which would push the movie back a few months from its currently planned slot of May 25, 2018. And the move makes a lot of sense.

With “Avengers: Infinity War” dropping on May 4, 2018 releasing a “Star Wars” film three weeks later doesn’t make much sense, and would potentially cut into the long tail play of the Marvel movie. Meanwhile, the only picture scheduled on the December 13, 2018 weekend is the Peter Jacksonproduced “Mortal Engines” which lands the next day. (It should be noted, December 13th is a Thursday; presumably the sources Making Star Wars are using are counting the traditional Thursday evening showings as the “opening day”).

Again, this is not official, but given Disney’s current success in the December corridor, it stands to reason that making “Star Wars” a part of everyone’s holiday tradition is just good business.

2017-01-03 06:18:11 Doctor Strange Confirmed to Appear in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

Benedict Cumberbatch‘s Doctor Strange made his big screen debut just a couple of months ago, and he doesn’t even have another solo film lined up just yet. But if you’re eager to see the Sorcerer Supreme again, you shouldn’t have too long to wait. It’s now confirmed that Strange will make an appearance alongside Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) in Thor: Ragnarok, out this fall.

The confirmation comes to us from a post on D23, the official Disney fan club, about things to look forward to in 2017. Casually buried inside a longer paragraph about upcoming Disney movies is this announcement: “Thor: Ragnarok in November brings together Thor, the Hulk, and Doctor Strange to face off against intergalactic baddies both familiar and new.” It remains unclear how big a role Strange will have in Thor: Ragnarok, but my guess is it’ll be a cameo or small supporting role. If Strange had a large part to play in Thor: Ragnarok, it seems unlikely Marvel would keep it so hidden for so long — or that they’d even be able to.

If you’ve seen Doctor Strange, the news shouldn’t come as a big surprise to you. The end credits showed Thor paying Strange a visit in the Sanctum Sanctorum, and Strange promising to help Thor locate Loki so the brothers can return to Asgard. Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi reportedly shot that scene, so it’s even possible that it’s actually from that upcoming film, not unlike how Ant-Man‘s end credits featured a clip from Captain America: Civil War.

And even before Doctor Strange hit theaters, photos from the set of Thor: Ragnarok had fans wondering if Strange would factor in somehow. In one image, Hemsworth, in character as Thor, is seen carrying a business card that reads “177A Bleecker St” — the address of Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. For his part, Waititi hasn’t said anything either way. “I can’t comment on it. It may have just been something for the fans,” he said last fall when asked about those photos. But of course, that’s what they always say.

Thor: Ragnarok is in theaters November 3, 2017.
