 SAMARIA

A Devotional for June 17, 2022

"He had to pass through Samaria."
John 4: 4

The Jews never associated with the Samaritans, yet as we read in John 4: 9 "One day the Lord had to go through Samaria to teach His disciples."

While the disciples were going to buy some food, the Lord was tired and was sitting by the well of Jacob, a Samaritan woman came to draw water at noon. The Lord said to her, "give me a drink". In response, she asked him a question, "How can you, being a Jew, ask me the Samaritan woman for water? There are also rules that prevent you from doing this". Jesus replied, "If you knew who I was and that I had come to destroy all these walls you would have asked me and I would have given you the water of life so that you would not be thirsty again."

When she asked Him about superiority, Jesus said, "if you wish to speak on superiority, he who drinks from this superior well of yours will be thirsty again; but he that drinks the water that I give him shall never thirst." As He was speaking to her, his disciples saw Him and were surprised that He was talking to a Samaritan woman. But the Lord did not care about culture, tradition, religion, and gender, but about a person's life. As He said clearly, to save that soul, He had to go through Samaria."

What is our Samaria? It is something we never want to go through. But the Lord is showing us here that sometimes, we will have to go outside of the territory that we live in, the territory that we have warmed up to, our comfort zone. The Lord is saying, "Go to that forbidden village, because there are many people waiting for your testimony to be able to find salvation." Therefore, let us go with the Lord, who will satisfy the thirst for eternal glory beyond the boundaries which we have made; He wants us to break free. And we are called to be witnesses, not only in Judea, but also in Samaria.

Life Application
Let us go beyond the culture, tradition, law, and order and testify of the Lord that He is "worthy" just as in His Word.

Prayer
Lord, help us to use the grace given to us because we have the truth and the grace that we need to leave our comfort zone and preach that there is no one more comforting and satisfying than you. Amen!
