 FAITH

A Devotional for August 31, 2022
Faith in Action

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we don’t see. This is what the ancients were commended for.” Hebrew 11: 1 – 2

In 1 Samuel 14, we see Jonathan son of Soul conversing with his young armor-bearer about the war they are facing with the Philistines. The conversation goes like this.

“Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving. Whether by many or by few.” “Do all that you have in mind” his young armor-bearer said. “Go ahead I am with you heart and soul.”  As the story continues, we see Johnathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre, followed by the rest of the Israeli army joining them, and in the end, they struck down the Philistines from Mikmash to Aijalon. I believe this interaction between Jonathan and his armor-bearer and the story that followed is a practical example of what is written in Hebrew 11. From this story I want us to pay attention to two things that can help us understand Hebrew 11 in depth.

1. Confidence– is the belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something. The above is the basic definition of confidence, and we see the confidence of Jonathan in the Lord as he decides to go forth in facing their enemies. And this is what faith in action looks like, making an active decision to completely rely on the Lord in whatever situation we find ourselves in.

2. Assurance– is a positive declaration intended to give confidence. “Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving.” This statement is what it means to have assurance about what Jonathan has not seen yet.

Practical faith is what I think of when I think of faith in action. Faith actively puts its confidence and assurance on the Lord and His word. our faith ought to be practical for what pleases the Lord is what we do with the faith that is available for us.

Life Application
This week I would like to challenge us all to intentionally put our faith into action in everything we find ourselves in.
