The Slaughterhouse of Chicago, USA. Built in 1865 and in operation for 106 years.
By 1900, the 2km² slaughterhouse housed 300,000 pigs, 75,000 cattle, 80,000 sheep and 6,000 horses. With the spread of direct transport from farmers by refrigerated trucks, the need for centralisation disappeared, and in 1971 the slaughterhouse was closed and an industrial park was built in its place.
