Gold is prized everywhere, which is why the US Army, from World War II to the Vietnam War, supplied some of its pilots and paratroopers with kits like this to get out of difficult situations.

They included 1.08 troy ounces of 10-carat gold, a Swiss Milus Snow Star wristwatch, a four gold link chain, a gold embossed pendant and two gold rings. These were supposed to be exchanged for the US military's life and freedom in case they were shot down in enemy territory.
