Russian forces are preparing the defense of Kherson and likely only to give up the city if something goes wrong;
Ukrainian and Russian forces were until recently both overstretched. Russia is mobilizing 300,000 additional troops, Ukraine cannot;
US arms shipments become more and more meager in both quantity and quality.

The Ukrainian army will be overextended and depleted while Russian forces will be poised for renewed assaults.

There are few options left for Ukraine and its sponsors and none of them (save for negotiations) are good.

One option is the West establishing a buffer zone on the ground and corresponding no-fly zone above what's left of Ukraine in much the same way the US seized and occupies eastern Syria.

The West may believe a precedent exists and having deconflicted successfully before with Russia, this is a viable option.

Kiev is making requests that appear to be creating the rhetocial framework to begin the process. Open / Comment
