A lot of energy and power is needed to produce aluminum and China being the world's largest aluminum producer had previously decided to cut their supply to reduce pollution. This is seen not only in China, as Slovak aluminum smelter Slovalco had decided to cut their output to 60% capacity only.

Aluminum stocks in LME-registered warehouses have fallen to the lowest level since 2007 at 767,700 tons, down from almost 2 million tons last March. This significant lack of supply is therefore driving aluminum prices upwards.
