A German startup has invented variable alloy wheels
Startup CompActive from Germany has introduced a variant of the
maximally aerodynamic alloy wheel.
The disc appears to be solid at first glance, but when necessary to vent hot air from the inside, special holes open up in the five wide spokes. As soon as the mechanisms cool down, they fall back into place.
The trick of the wheels is the actuators that move the flaps. First of all, they are very compact. Second, they don't have a rod and hinge mechanism. They work on bending. Third, everything happens automatically, without driver input. As soon as the temperature inside the disc rises, the openings themselves open.
