See: The connection between hippocampal atrophy in depression and how that same region of the brain is used to navigate 3d spaces like rooms in houses. The theory is that if you sit in the same space for too long parts of your brain like the hippocampus shrink and this can contribute to depression, which in turn tends to keep you isolated in a vicious circle. Hiking is one of the best exercises because you are moving through new spaces in all dimensions and your brain and body have to work together, strengthening connections and forming new ones. On a treadmill you are using the same muscles over and over and your brain shuts off. Same with gym & car in general. Enclosed spaces where your body isn't constantly adapting to a rapidly evolving environment.

Car doing it for you doesn't count. Because the car is the same 'place' to your brain the entire time. cf. the concept of 'placelessness'. Seeing and feeling the effectiveness can improve you even more long term because you see yourself as both the marble and the sculptor.

The intensity of perceptions like flying or sailing also helps. Or seeking intense overland driving, you can go crazy sailing across the ocean. Overland is nice because you're off the road so to speak. Needless to say hiking is master race you are constantly adapting your body to the ups and downs and changing weather and sunlight. It's brain exercise as much as body.
