2022-04-20 15:34:33 Using music in teaching English

Using music in the classroom is a great way for teachers to achieve success with language learners. There are a variety of different ways to use music in the classroom. Some teachers prefer to use background music and others use music lyrics as the basis of a lesson.

Here are some activities for you to try:

Use background music such as classical music or natural sounds to inspire creativity.

Teach a song that uses slang expressions, a new tense you have introduced or phrasal verbs and idioms.

Write or choose a classroom theme song. It makes easier to remember the topic and main expressions.

Create cloze exercises using popular song lyrics to get involved your students into the learning process.

Create variations to familiar songs by making them personal for your class members or your lesson.

Have "lyp sync" contests. Allow students to choose their own songs. A little competition goes a long way in the classroom. Have groups explain the lyrics of their song before or after they perform.

Have soft or upbeat music playing before class to encourage a positive atmosphere. Turning the music off is a great way to signal to a large class that it is time to begin.

Music can be used to break the ice in a class where students don't know each other or are having difficulty communicating, teach and build vocabulary and idioms, review material or teach pronunciation and intonation.

2022-04-12 08:00:18 Activities to use in large classes

Due to space, budget or lack of teachers, many schools only offer large classes. In some schools, large classes may consist of up to 30 or more students.

While there are numerous challenges when it comes to teaching large classes, there are many coping skills and activities that you can use to make your job easier.

Balderdash: Large class can be split into teams. Teacher calls out a word and students have to write down the part of speech and definition. Each student to get both correct gets a point for her team.

Quescussion. As the name indicates, combines questions and discussion into one activity. There are four basic rules: discussion has to be in question form, a person may speak only one time and no fake questions.

Think-pair-share.This is a good ice-breaking technique for early in the term. Pose a question or problem to entire class: answerable but complex. Then divide students into pairs. Have them discuss their answers with each other for two to three minutes. Invite students to share responses with entire class.

Write the question: Large class can be split into teams. Call out an answer and the students have to write the question, (for example : George Washington) Each student to write the correct question gets a point. (ex. answer: Who is the first president of the USA?")

Make sure students communicate with each others, don’t ask them to perform a speech in front of the class because students can get easily distracted if they just have to listen for more time.
