Basketball was invented by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith, a 31-year-old graduate student from Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891. The idea was to play a less injury-prone sport than football indoors during the winter and rainy days. Surprisingly, in the early days, dribbling was not a significant aspect of the basketball game. This means that players may catch the ball, take a few steps to slow down, stop, and then throw the ball from that spot. Dribbling became a crucial aspect of the game when modern basketball was born in the 1950s. Today, we know of many more variations of this game: wheelchair basketball, water or beach basketball, unicycle basketball, slamball, and streetball.
