Jacques Carlu
Capitoline Hill (student work).1924 .

The hub of this illustration is Capitoline, one of the traditional seven hills of Rome that was especially built up during the era of the Etruscan kings ( sixth century b.c. ), when the great temple was built and dedicated to the Capitoline Triad : Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. Despite considerable progress by archaeologists during that time , Carlu's work appears to have been inspired mainly by imaginary and chance criteria - although he did use some elements of fact - instead of genuine historical and archaeological data.

Bellotti Pietro
Capriccio with Ruins , 1750

In painting, a capriccio means an architectural fantasy, placing together buildings, archaeological ruins and other architectural elements in fictional and often fantastical combinations.
