The mystery of the Chicxulub craterChicxulub (which means "demon of ticks" in Mayan) is located on the Yucatan Peninsula and partially goes into the ocean - it was there in the 1970s that circular arcs were first discovered during the development of oil and gas fields in the Gulf of Mexico.
Research data show that the crater really was formed 65 million years ago by the fall of an asteroid with a diameter of 10 kilometers.
It has been calculated that the impact released 100 teratons of TNT equivalent energy--two million times the yield of the largest thermonuclear device, the Soviet Tsar Bomba (58.6 megatons in TNT equivalent).
