Yesterday in 1954 the democratically elected president of Guatemala, Jacobo Arbenz, was overthrown by a coup staged by the CIA and the United Fruit company.
The dictatorship the U.S. put after him was responsible for the genocide of the indigenous maya population (~200k victims) and the suppression of leftists and the EGP.
It was backed by the U.S., with Taiwan, Israel and Argentina (at the time under an U.S. backed dictatorship) that helped fighting the EGP.
