Go from National Service to the Ivy League

Here’s a common misconception: your National Service = you pressing pause on your life.

But the truth is, NS can be a blessing in disguise. The extra two years gives students two more application cycles to apply in, not to mention more time to bolster portfolios and craft compelling essays!

Join us on July 31st and hear how you can leverage your free time in NS to get into your dream US or UK University.

We’ll also cover:
Strategic tips: when is it best to apply?
Application advice for second time applicants: how can you increase your chances of getting accepted the second time around?
NS man case study: How a NSman built most of his portfolio in NS and landed a place at a top university
FAQs (such as how deferment works for the US and the UK, the impact of COVID-19!)

2021-07-24 07:30:08 Fortnightly News Round Up

+ Record number of students set to start university amid rise in offers – Yahoo News
https://yhoo.it/3eOHB6x

Kyra's Analysis: "With a drastic increase in application numbers alongside an uptick in offers extended to students from UK universities in the latest admissions round, UCAS has predicted that a record number of students will enrol at UK colleges for the fall. According to UCAS data, as of June 30 (the service’s final application deadline), 6% more applications have been submitted for fall 2021 entry to UK institutions compared with the previous year, and 3% more offers have been extended. For many, the latest admissions cycle has been a bit unsettling: application numbers skyrocketed in 2020, meaning acceptance rates at many of the world’s most sought-after universities plummeted because despite an increase in applications, the number of available places remained largely stagnant. This news offers some reassurance to students hoping to pursue an education in the UK as it shows that although universities received massive amounts of applications, they also extended more offers!"

+ UC admits largest, most diverse class ever, but it was harder to get accepted - LA Times
https://lat.ms/3x0VfKb

Kyra's Analysis: "The University of California system — which includes UC Berkeley, UCLA and 7 other undergraduate campuses — admitted a collective 132,353 prospective freshmen this year, an 11% increase from last year. Acceptance rates at 7 UC campuses decreased compared to last year due to skyrocketing application numbers, but their freshman classes are nonetheless more ethnically and socioeconomically diverse across the board. At Crimson, we’re always encouraged by news that universities are taking action to build more inclusive and diverse communities. We’re thrilled to know that not only has the University of California system made an effort to combat unprecedented application numbers by admitting more students than ever before, but they’ve also made diversity a top priority to help ensure that underrepresented students have access to the educational opportunities they deserve."

+ R.I. first state to have all colleges mandating COVID vaccine - University Busines
https://bit.ly/3Bwwgll

Kyra's Analysis: "Rhode Island’s 11 institutions of higher education—which include an Ivy League school, several privates, a state university and a community college system—are requiring doses for students who will be on campuses at the start of the fall semester, making it the first US state in which every higher education institution will require students to be vaccinated before returning to campus this fall. For months we’ve applauded unis for announcing vaccine requirements in an effort to provide the safest possible environment for returning staff and students. While we also sympathize with the institutions whose reservations have kept them from mandating vaccinations, we’re encouraged to see that hundreds of colleges in the US are taking this major step forward in the fight against COVID-19! We know how much students have missed in-person learning and everyday we grow more optimistic that pandemic-related restrictions on college campuses will soon be a thing of the past."
