The biggest surprise of the entry list of the Silk Way Rally 2021 was the name of Guerlain Chicherit. He will be back to cross-country racing after a 5-year break! Some months ago, Guerlain Chicherit confirmed his return to the 2022 Dakar Rally with his own race team GCK Motorsport with a vehicle fuelled by bioethanol as part of a multi-year Dakar project by the team. Now, in preparation for Dakar, Guerlain will participate in the Silk Way Rally 2021 in a vehicle Century CR6 of Serradori Team. Guerlain Chicherit answered the questions of the Cross-Country Rally News telegram channel.

I've not actually done the SWR before, so I'm really looking forward to seeing the environment and just getting back to rallying after a 5 year break from long-distance racing! As you know, I'm planning on returning to the Dakar Rally in 2022 as part of a multi-year Dakar project my team and I have been working on. In doing the SWR with my Dakar co-driver Alex, it'll provide the perfect platform for us to get back into racing together after all this time.

McDonald’s Rally Team will take part in the Silk Way Rally 2021. The passion for riding led two friends Davide and Aldo and their sons Max and Andy to seek adventures together. Davide Camurri is the team manager, he will take care of the service and Massimo Camurri is one of the three riders with Aldo Winkler and Andy Winkler.

Massimo Camurri answered the questions of the Cross-Country Rally News telegram channel.

Me and my dad Davide will drive the van to the race start, so it will be an adventure into the adventure. The other members of the crew will arrive via airplane to Omsk. Inside the van we will bring all the tools to fix the bikes in bivouacs and all camping stuff. It was very hard to prepare and take care of everything. We were lucky to buy that KTM Rally, so we didn't really have to prepare the bike much, as it's almost ready to race from the factory! The goal for the team is to bring all the bikes and riders to the finish line, and to enjoy this adventure of a lifetime.

2021-06-21 09:35:45 BARAGWANATH AND CREMER WIN TGRSA 1000 DESERT RACE IN UPINGTON

Brian Baragwanath and navigator, Leonard Cremer won the inaugural Toyota Gazoo Racing SA (TGRSA) 1000 Desert Race that took place over three days, 18, 19 and 20 June, and almost a thousand kilometres in the Upington area of the Northern Cape with their Century Racing CR6.

The TGRSA 1000 Desert Race formed the third round of the 2021 South African National Cross Country Series (SACCS) and is the only marathon event on the calendar.

A total of 43 teams started the TGRSA 1000 Desert Race that substituted the historical Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race that could not be hosted in Botswana this year due to the pandemic. Teams had to complete the northern loop of the TGRSA 1000 Desert Race twice on Saturday and a different loop towards the south of Upington twice on Sunday.

After three tough days of racing and a nail-biting duel with Henk Lategan/Brett Cummings (TGRSA Toyota Hilux) on the final two days, it was Baragwanath and Cremer who brought their two-wheel drive Century Racing CR6 home in a total time of 11 hours 27 minutes and 30 seconds to win the Production Vehicle Category as well as the FIA Class.
Lategan/Cummings having to push the new petrol-powered 3.5 litre turbo charged V6 Hilux as hard as they could in three-wheel drive, the team had to settle for the runner-up position, only three minutes and 16 seconds behind the winners after more than 11 and a half hours of racing.

The overall Production Vehicle Category and FIA Class podium were rounded off by Lance Woolridge/Elvéne Vonk (Ford Castrol Cross Country Ranger) (11:36:49) who had a good race with only one flat tyre on the final day. They were tied in a battle with Giniel de Villiers/Dennis Murphy (TGRSA Hilux) who also lost time with three punctures while they frustratingly got stuck on a mound and lost more time to eventually finish the race in fifth place overall and in the FIA Class.

Eben Basson/Gerhard Schutte (Red-Lined Motorsport VK56) clawed their way back to 13th in the category at the halfway mark of the race. Basson, who competed in his first ever marathon desert race, and Schutte eventually finished ninth overall and in the FIA Class. They also won the Road the Dakar Challenge and a free entry to the Dakar Rally and plan to participate in this event in 2023. Open / Comment

I’m planning to take part in all rounds of the World Cup 2021 in SSV T3 category in a Polaris with Xtreme+ Team. My goal during this season is to prepare well for the Dakar 2022. My last race was Rally Kazakistan. The race was amazing! A mix of technical passages, fast tracks and a lot of attention to navigation which made it exceptional! I am going to the Silk Way Rally for the first time, but I’m sure it’ll give me emotions I’m seeking for: speed, technique and navigation. In Russia and Mongolia I expect to see everything in a unique geographical frame.

The compact 2022 calendar, to be announced later this year, is anticipated to include a maximum of five rounds, including the Dakar Rally, with events still open to T1, T2, T3 and T4 vehicles. The T3 and T4 categories, in particular, will also benefit from further development under this agreement, and new FIA regulations for T5 Prototype Trucks will be published for 2022, ensuring the inclusivity of all vehicle categories for professionals and amateurs in the World Championship.
 
FIA World Championship titles will be awarded to the overall winning driver, co-driver and manufacturer, while new FIA Championship titles will be introduced for all other categories, including a manufacturers’ title in both T4 and T5.
