Dutch intel (AIVD) thwarted a multi-year operation by GRU to infiltrate an illegal in a court in The Hague.

Sergei Vladimirovich Cherkasov, a Russian GRU military intelligence officer from Kaliningrad, posed as a Brazilian named Victor Müller Ferreira and spent many years securing his cover and getting an internship at the International Criminal Court.

Unlike the intelligence services of other countries, Russia has long and successfully specialized in deep cover agents. True, it takes from 5 to 10 years to prepare a cover and train such an illegal intelligence agent.

Ferreira-Cherkasov has been aimed for infiltration in the ICC since the end of last year — Russian authorities were understanding that risk would be justified after the start of an investigation into war crimes in Ukraine.

"Victor" made a lot of friends at Johns Hopkins University in the US and Trinity College Dublin; his friends took jobs in a variety of institutions, from the investment bank Goldman Sachs to think tanks and the FBI, and Ferreira himself called Putin a “cancer”, actively supported Trump and moved to Washington in August 2018...
