The U.S. Army is restoring order to the streets of Detroit, July 1967.
That summer of 1967 went down in U.S. history as the "long hot summer" because of a series of pogroms by African-Americans. According to police data, riots broke out 164 times in the first nine months of that year. Their scale in the U.S. was surpassed only by the riots in New York in 1863 and the 1992 riot in Los Angeles.
