A sign erected in a wooden Navy aircraft factory warehouse announcing the active spread of the Spanish flu virus, Philadelphia, 1918.

The Spanish flu was probably the most massive influenza pandemic in human history in absolute numbers, both in the number of people infected and the number of deaths. In 1918-1919, around 550 million people, or 29.5 percent of the world's population, were infected with Spanish Flu worldwide. Approximately 50-100 million people, or 2.7-5.3% of the world's population, died, making this epidemic one of the largest catastrophes in human history.
