Young Bengal Movement

The Hindu College of Calcutta's philosophers served as the movement's leaders for the young Bengal. These individuals were also referred to as Derozians.

They were given this moniker in honour of Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, a professor at the same college.

With his teaching and the founding of a group for debate and discussion of literature, philosophy, history, and science, Derozio supported radical ideals.

They valued the principles of the French Revolution (1789 AD) and British liberalism.

The Derozians were also in favour of education and women's rights.

Their limited success was primarily due to the social climate at the time, which was unfavourable to the adoption of radical ideas.

Moreover, there was no support from any other social group or class.

The Derozians lacked any real link with the masses, for instance, they failed to take up the peasants’ cause.

In fact their radicalism was bookish in character. But, despite their limitations, the Derozians carried forward Roy’s tradition of public education on social, economic, and political questions.
