This is merely a show of strength from a party that is now at its weakest. The communist party has never polled so low in decades and suffered its biggest defeat in municipal elections 4 years ago, as the political maps above show us, with much of the red disappearing from the map.

In Lyon, an important French city, riots broke out in the no-go zone of La Duchère, populated mainly by non-Europeans.

The rioters set fire to several vehicles and buildings and attacked the police with homemade mortars.

These events followed a chase between a local criminal and the police, during which the criminal fell off his motorbike and injured himself. The riot occurred in retaliation.
