Q: Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things we do not really need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with?

Answer:

It is arguably no exaggeration to say that we are living in the age of advertisements whereby the plethora of ads in various forms can profoundly influence our buying decisions. Although advertising might be considered indispensable for publicizing new products, which may make our lives better, I believe that it is more likely to entice people to purchase unnecessary products.

To start with, advertising companies primarily try to associate a product or brand with a particular lifestyle. Axiomatically, people who identify with that lifestyle will feel attracted to those products without taking into consideration whether or not they need such items. In other words, they may buy many unnecessary products to avoid social ostracism. Take Amazon e-book readers, as an example, whose adverts persuasively picture scenes of doctors and businessmen using those gadgets.

Furthermore, using provocative imagery and slogans, companies also try to manipulate people into buying their goods. For this end, cosmetics manufactures, for instance, use pictures of models with hourglass figures, lustrous lips and shiny hair, holding a bottle of shampoo or a bar of soap to promote their products. Would every customer who uses that shampoo or soap really look like that attractive figure? By the same token, luxury perfumes made by Chanel and other firms use brand recognition via sexually suggestive phrases shown on billboards.

That said, it should also be admitted that without promotion, some products which are of genuine value and real quality would not be as known to the public as deserved. An illustration of that is health-related products, such as vitamins and supplements which can strengthen the immune system.

Overall, it cannot be denied that most advertisements we face nowadays are just there to seduce prospective customers into making unnecessary purchases or open new markets for their new products, though advertisements could have more effective applications, as put in the above.

Discuss both views

Q: Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is best to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Answer:

We all encounter difficult circumstances at some stage in life. Sometimes, we are overwhelmed with a challenging situation for which there appears to be no clear solution. There is often much debate around whether we should accept unpleasant situations or not, particularly when it comes to work or money. While some people believe that acceptance is sometimes a good choice when faced with these problems, I am of the opinion that we can first attempt to overcome them.

There are some reasons people accept difficult situations when they occur. Some people think it is simply beyond their capabilities to confront or deal with a trying situation or event, and hence attempting to tackle these issues causes them more stress and frustration without bringing about any significant change. Another reason is the fear of encountering risk or failure while seeking a change or a solution for such situations. Such people in fact tend to think about the barriers more than the potential benefits that a change can bring for them.

But they can at least try to overcome unexpected difficulties instead of simply accepting them. For example, if someone loses their job, they should accept one with lower pay instead of becoming a burden to society. Additionally, resolving a difficult situation will equip us with valuable experience for the future. Many successful professional sportspeople have gone on achieving stunning success because they refused to give up when they encountered poverty or lack of support early in their careers.

In conclusion, although accepting undesirable situations sometimes has benefits, I maintain that in the first step it is better to make an effort to overcome these problems. If people know how to deal with difficulties, they will definitely be more successful in their life.
