Cain and Abel do not just represent two archetypal types of being. This is two different potential patterns of destiny, and you do not manifest one purely and the other zero. It is the line between good and evil that runs down the human heart. It is exactly the same idea. Maybe you are more like Cain or maybe you are more like Abel, but there is still a little Cain in you no matter how Abel you are. And maybe more than a little. And probably more than a little.

If you watch your fantasies, which I would very much recommend, you will find that they show you dark things about you that will shock you if you allow yourself to be conscious of what you are thinking. When you are having an argument with someone — especially someone you love — is a good time to just watch the pictures that flash in the back of your mind.

That is part of coming into contact with what Carl Jung called “the shadow,” and the shadow is the manifestation of Cain. That is a perfect way of thinking about it. Jung was not someone you mess around with lightly. He said the human shadow has roots that reach all the way to hell, and Jung meant that. That is no metaphor for him. He might not have meant it in the same way that a Fundamentalist Christian from the Southern U.S. might mean it, but I would say that Jung meant it in a way that is far more terrifying — and also far more true. I have lived in many houses and I have renovated three almost from scratch – with other people’s help, obviously – but I have done a lot of the renovation and design work myself and so has Tammy, and so we know the house. Any place in your house that you have not attended to in detail – and that might mean cleaned off with a cloth or brushed or sorted or organized or arrayed, your bookshelves, your drawers – is not part of the habitable order that is good. It is part of chaos still, and you react to it as if it is unfamiliar and foreign. That makes you uncomfortable and makes you feel not at home.

The advantage you gain by pouring your attention into every nook and cranny in your house is that the house becomes familiar. The house turns into a home and that is all a consequence of dedicated attention. And if you jointly dedicate your attention to that, then it is the house that you both inhabit. If you do that properly, you produce a better house as a consequence of your dialogue than either of you would have produced in isolation even if you would have got exactly what you wanted. First, you admit that there is a problem. Second, you admit that you have something to learn. The third thing you do is to ask for revelation of the thing that you need to learn. And maybe you open yourself up to receipt of that in dialogue with someone else, but it is also something that can make itself manifest within.

You might say, “Well, you thought that up.” That is not really how it works. You ask the question and if you are extraordinarily fortunate — maybe that means you were on your knees with sufficient intensity — a redemptive answer will make itself manifest, and that is the offering up, the sacrificial offering up, and the descent of something like the unifying spirit, practically speaking.
