"The Idealist's Head"
Ken Curry

Another name for this painting is self-portrait. The artist depicted himself as a frightening humanoid creature with sunken eye sockets and a sunken mouth. What the artist probably meant to say is that all idealistic ideas sooner or later collapse.

"Figure with meat", Francis Bacon

In the background are two large, hanging meat carcasses from the ceiling. They are shown at this angle, as if Papa were an angel, and the two pieces of meat are wings behind his back. Bacon probably wanted to show that it is only one step from a holy man to a bloodsucker and cruel monster. 1954

Energy of Peace, 1980

This performance by Marina Abramovic and Ulay, the former husband of the "grandmother of performance art," took place in Amsterdam in 1980.

The artists stood in front of each other, holding a huge bow while falling backwards. The action lasted four minutes, with Ulay holding a bowstring and an arrow aimed straight at Abramovic's heart, and Marina holding the bow itself. A special feature of the performance were microphones attached to the artists' bodies, which monitored and transmitted the heartbeat.

The main idea of the action was to visually display the importance of trust in relationships. Marina Abramovic later shared that this was one of the hardest works for her to reproduce.
