The Snake Friend
Once there lived a snake and a little girl who were very fast friends. Every day when the mother served her daughter milk and bread, the snake popped out of its hole to share the food. But it only drank the milk. In return, the snake gave the little girl many lovely gifts.
One day, the girl didn’t want to eat her food. When the snake arrived to share her food, the girl said, “You will get the milk but you have to eat the bread too.” The snake refused to do so and the girl got angry. She hit him with a spoon on his head. Just then, her mother entered. “Snake! Snake!” she cried in fear. She was unaware of her daughter’s friendship with the snake. Angrily, she picked up a log of wood lying nearby and threw it at the snake and killed it.
The little girl became very sad for she had lost her only true friend. She became pale and gave up drinking milk and eating bread.

The Miser
A miser once sold everything he had and bought gold instead.
He carefully buried the gold in a hole near his house. He used to look at the gold daily and admire it. One of his workmen noticed him doing this and one day, he dug the spot where the gold lay hidden and stole it.
The next day, when the miser found the hole empty he could not believe that someone had stolen all his gold. He cried loudly and began to tear his hair in despair.
On hearing the cause of his grief, his neighbour gave him a stone and advised, “Don’t feel sad. Place this stone in the hole and imagine that it is the gold. It will make no difference since you did not make any use of the gold as long as you had it.”

The Three Billy Goats Gruff
There lived three billy goats who decided to climb a mountain to chew grass. But a wooden bridge had to be crossed to reach the mountain. Underneath it lived a one-eyed troll (giant), who ate up all those who tried to cross the bridge.
The smallest Billy Goat Gruff, (for that was their name), went first. As he stepped on the bridge, the troll shouted, “Who goes there across my bridge?”
“I am the smallest Billy Goat Gruff,” came the reply.
“I shall eat you up,” roared the troll.
“Please wait, for a bigger goat is on its way,” said the small Billy Goat Gruff. The greedy troll decided to let him go.
The second billy goat also told the troll the samething and crossed the bridge. On seeing the third billy goat, the troll pounced on him. But the goat was big and he knocked the troll down with his huge horns and killed it.
