A 26-year-old woman comes to the office due to several weeks of pain and muffled hearing in the left ear. She also describes a sensation of jaw clicking when chewing food. The patient has a background history of episodic headaches and left-sided facial pain for several years that are worse when moving the jaw. She also has been told that she grinds her teeth while asleep. On examination, the patient is unable to open her mouth fully and develops pain with passive movement of the jaw. The external auditory canal and tympanic membrane are normal. Rinne and Weber hearing tests are also normal. Left medial pterygoid muscle dysfunction is suspected.

The patient's short stature, webbed neck, and broad chest are typical features of Turner syndrome (TS) (45,X). TS is the most common sex-chromosome abnormality and is caused by complete or partial loss of an X chromosome.
Cardiovascular abnormalities are the most life-threatening comorbidity associated with TS. Therefore, all patients with TS require screening for cardiac disease with 4-extremity blood pressures and echocardiography.
Left-sided cardiac anomalies
are most common and include bicuspid aortic valve and coarctation of the aorta. Patients with coarctation and aortic valve disease, as well as those with hypertension, are at increased risk for aortic root dilation, which can progress to aortic dissection or rupture.
