2021-09-24 19:59:01 Manchester United scouts have been instructed to identify alternatives to Declan Rice in their search for a defensive midfielder next summer amid concerns over his valuation and contrasting opinions within Old Trafford over his ability to significantly improve the team.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær remains an admirer of Declan Rice but the club's recruitment team is yet to be convinced that he possesses the qualities to take the team to another level.

Rice is regarded as a powerful presence in midfield with a strong defensive mindset and has also caught the eye with his ability to break forward, but figures at Manchester United have cast doubt on whether he is quick enough with and without the ball.

With West Ham expected to value Rice at between £80-90 million, Manchester United believe an alternative can be found outside the Premier League who would be equally, if not more, effective and not subject to the inflation that accompanies the fees for English players. A move for Declan Rice continues to have support within Manchester United but he is likely to be one of a number of options by the time the club make their move at the end of the season.
